12 Reasons I Enjoy Teaching Historical Fiction
The Great Depression and the Colonization of Africa are two of my favorite periods in history to teach students to write about. When I teach the great depression, I turn to John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Colonialism of Africa draws me to Athol Fugard's Master Harold and the boys.
In my experience, I have found that the following twelve reasons are at the center of my practice. Although others cite some very valid reasons for teaching in this genre, these reasons keep me motivated and my students writing.
