PREFACE
​
Emigration comes with its own set of cultural and psychological upheavals, even fragmentation brought on by xenophobia, language barriers, financial hardships, and destruction of the family bond. As a New York based educator, I experience a microcosm of the larger society, culturally diverse classrooms as colorful and complex as the United Nations. Some groups can hold on to their Mother Culture and navigate the new systems with more optimism, protection, and success. However, not all ethnic groups enjoy this freedom. Some groups, marginalized, suffer emotional traumas and setbacks. The marginalized experience difficulty reclaiming aspects of their culture to preserve their identity. Imagine the case of the African in the diaspora. The loss further compounds the fragmentation.
